Wi-Fi for a coaching institute when the exam is on

Most days a coaching institute network is unremarkable. Then an online test starts, everybody connects at once, and the network has one job.

Peaks, not averages

A network sized for the average day will be sized wrong for the hour that matters. Online tests create the worst possible pattern: a large number of devices, all active in the same minutes, all needing steady rather than fast connections.

Steady is the word that gets missed. A test does not need a large download. It needs latency that does not spike while somebody else in the building starts a large one.

Timetable-shaped rules

Class-time rules only help if they match the actual timetable. A rule that applies all day is either too strict to survive or too loose to matter, and it will be turned off within a fortnight.

Rules that follow the schedule can be stricter during class and looser outside it, because they are only in force when they make sense. The same applies to bandwidth: a guaranteed share reserved for exam sessions costs nothing during the hours when nobody is testing.

Roles inside one building

Faculty, students and visitors are not the same network user, and treating them as one is what forces institutes into either a locked-down network staff cannot work on or an open one that fails during tests. Access built per role lets both be true at once.
